AT&T’s free Wi-Fi offer for iPhone is very short-lived

In a strange move AT&T has disabled recently launched free Wi-Fi for the iPhone. Now it is not only unavailable in public places but also in Starbucks and Barnes and Noble stores.

Instead of seeing specially designed webpage, users were greeted by enter username/password screen for AT&T wireless account.

AT&T did not comment on neither free Wi-Fi or on recent Wi-Fi disappearance.

It is speculated that the free Wi-Fi was shut down because laptop users could easily trick the system into thinking that they are using iPhones.

The free Wi-Fi for iPhone users was shut off due to the fact it was easily cheated,” said a user identified as CommanderData on MacRumors. “Anyone can set their user-agent string to Safari and connect to the Wi-Fi if they know a valid iPhone telephone number. This means you could connect with your laptop if you used your buddy’s number for free!”
