If you are on a long trip, with no places to charge your iPhone you might think about conserving battery power. PDA Street reports several methods on how to do this.
Change Mail Auto-Check: You can turn it off in (Settings > Mail > Auto-Check and tap Manual) or change the regular 30 min interval to hourly (Settings > Mail > Auto-Check and tap every hour)
Reduce the number of email accounts iPhone checks.
If you are in the area with no Wi-Fi, or you do not use it, then it would be a good idea to turn it off a well. (Settings>Wi-Fi>Off)

Turn off Bluetooth. (Settings > General > Bluetooth > Off)
Decreasing brightness would also help. To Dim it go to (Settings > Brightness, drag the slider to the left). Or you can use Auto brightness adjustment (Settings > Brightness and set Auto-Brightness to On)
Turn off EQ (Settings > iPod > EQ and tap off)
