Buzz mounts on 3G iPhone as Apple CEO sets appearance

Apple’s top executive addresses an industry conference Monday, amid buzzing around the world that the company could announce the next generation of its blockbuster mobile iPhone.

The original iPhone was launched on June 29, 2007, and set off a global buying frenzy.

Speculation has swirled that Apple chief executive Steve Jobs will announce the 3G iPhone in a keynote speech Monday on the opening day of the company’s five-day Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Apple has been snapping up contracts with mobile operators around the world for its third-generation (3G) iPhone.

iPhone watchers are predicting the new iPhone will have global positioning system (GPS) capabilities, video recording, an upgraded camera, and more space — 32 gigabytes of storage, said the website Silicon Valley Insider.

Late last month, Goldman Sachs lifted its 12-month share price target on Apple to 220 dollars from 185 dollars due to expected fierce demand for the 3G iPhone.

Goldman said it still expects Apple to beat its own target of 10 million iPhone sales for 2008, with the broker currently projecting sales more in the region of 11 million.

Bernstein Research said in late May that it had been asked by investors to gauge the impact of the new phone on Apple’s bottom line.

Bernstein estimates that the 3G iPhone, which, based on recent carrier announcements, will be introduced into at least 50 additional countries, will sell roughly 15 million to 20 million units in fiscal 2009.
