If you’re already in Beijing, have your iPhone to hand and can’t quite figure out if you’re about to watch the kayak slalom or synchronised swimming, here comes Google to the rescue. It’s just launched an iPhone-friendly version of its Translate service and Chinese is one of the many supported languages.
This won’t help much if you can’t actually read Sinitic languages, of course, but until Google launches a text-to-speech service, you’ll have to settle for holding up the iPhone screen and hoping for the best.

Google reckons that you can get between 200 to 400 translations per megabyte of downloads, so international data roaming charges shouldn’t prove too crippling. Just go to translate.google.com on your iPhone to see the custom interface.
And don’t forget that you can also keep up with Olympic events with Google, too. Try searching for an Olympic event and Google will include appropriate event schedules in the list of links as they become available. Alternatively, go to www.google.com/m/summergames and you can browse through a list of all events. Beach volleyball indeed…
