5 things you need to know about HTC’s Google Android phone

Next week, Google, HTC and T Mobile will finally rip the covers off the much-vaunted Android phone, the HTC Dream. Known also by its slightly less pony name, the G1, it’s set to give Apple, Microsoft and Nokia a major headache, seeing as it’ll comprise a WinMo and iPhone beating OS, coupled with a Nok-slapping handset. But what you want to know is why it’ll really shake things up. Read on, dear Stuffers, to find out.

It’s due on 23 September
Reuters has said that T Mobile and Google are plotting an announcement for 23 September, where they’ll give the world’s media a taste of the HTC Dream and everything Android has to offer. Think a Steve Jobs keynote but with a justifiable amount of hype and no turtle neck in sight.

It’ll cost the same as the iPhone 3G
The Wall Street Journal confirmed this week that the first Android phone, the HTC Dream, would cost no more than $199. That means it’ll go mano-a-mano with the iPhone 3G in the States and with a likely UK price tag of £99, do the same here in Blighty too. Seeing as you’ll get a lot more blower for your buck, it looks like the Dream is where it’s at.

The OS is revoultionary
Forget the iPhone’s slinky interface, Google Android is set to change mobile phones forever, thanks to its open source platform letting developers cook up whatever they want. From live mapping apps to killer cooking recipes, you’ll be able to snag anything that takes your fancy and stick it on your phone. If you think Apple’s App Store is good, just wait until Google get going.

It’ll have better features than your average smartphone
With a 3.2MP camera, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi and HSDPA, the HTC Dream, or G1, will give Apple plenty to think about. Plus, with Android on board, chances are it’ll be a hell of a lot smoother and fun to use than your current Symbian or WinMo device. The one you struggle with daily, that is.

It’ll be a T Mobile exclusive
For now, T Mobile has got the monopoly on the Dream, but don’t expect this stranglehold to be anything like O2’s grasp on the iPhone 3G. Next year will see a string of Android phones from the likes of Samsung and LG, with more carrieres jumping on the bandwagon. If you don’t like T Mobile, hold on a few months and we guarantee the phone for you will arrive.
