Apple own up to iPhone 3G difficulties

Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, last night owned up to the problems surrounding the new iPhone 3G and said a new software update would be released to fix the glitches.

Apple is facing court cases in the US over the iPhone’s reception bugs and dropped call problems.

Two complainants have launched lawsuits and have asked for class action status, which would allow potentially thousands of other disgruntled users to join in.

Many iPhone users have been frustrated that their new iPhone does not appear to connect consistently to the 3G data network.

Support forums have been flooded with gripes. Apple finally acknowledged the iPhone 3G’s reception issues last month, confirming that the iPhone OS 2.0.2 software update was designed to fix those problems.

At the Let’s Rock event to launch the latest range of iPods, Mr Jobs said a further free iPhone 2.1 update will be released on Friday to fix the troubles.

“It’s a big update. It fixes a lot of bugs. You will get fewer call drops.” He said the update would give improved battery life, another frequent complaint, and get rid of system “crashes” involving Apple’s App store.

“You are not going to get some of the crashes and other things that we’ve seen,” he said.
