A fair few security holes have been discovered on the iPhone and the 2.1 firmware due for release on Friday does contain some security fixes. However, it’s unclear at this stage whether or not it will address this latest exploit.
The problem relates to the iPhone’s passcode security – both on the iPhone 2G and 3G – and in short, allows the four-digit code required to access the iPhone’s features to be bypassed.
More details, plus a video of the iPhone passcode crack in action, after the cut.
With the passcode enabled, simply pressing the Emergency Call button and then double-tapping the Home button will take you to whatever function you assigned to the Home button shortcut. If it’s iPhone Favorites, an interloper can access the personal details of your Favorite contacts and call them; if it’s the iPod, they can listen to your music (which isn’t quite as big a problem).
It’s a small hole, but a hole nonetheless and one that Apple needs to fix fast. In the meantime, there is a simple DIY solution – just assign the Home button double-tap shortcut to the Home screen. This effectively closes the security hole, but does mean that you also lose access to the iPod controls when listening to music when the iPhone is locked – if you used that feature in the first place, of course.
Here’s a short video that shows the security exploit in action and explains how to fix it yourself.
