iPhone Dev Team Pwns iPhone 2.1

That was fast. Mere hours after Apple released the iPhone 2.1 firmware update, the iPhone Dev Team cracked it. Now you can jailbreak your 3G iPhone running 2.1 and run your own apps on it.

For those who still aren’t satisfied with the “openness” of the 2.0 version of the iPhone and still wish to jailbreak the phone to run their own third party apps — or use it on another network — there is good news. The iPhone Dev team has released new versions of its Pwnage and QuickPwn tools that will snap the locks that are meant to keep the iPhone buttoned down.

Shortly after the 3G iPhone was released, I harangued Apple for essentially bricking the cellular radio in my first-generation iPhone. The iPhone Dev Team’s QuickPwn tool was an easy answer to that problem. Downloading and using the tool to unlock my iPhone, which was running 2.0.2 firmware, was a cinch. Now I can use the cellular radio again and have tested it with T-Mobile and AT&T (NYSE: T) SIM cards.

I haven’t taken that step with the 3G iPhone yet, and probably won’t until the warranty expires.

The iPhone Dev Team was able to circumvent Apple’s controls through iTunes 8. Keep in mind, this is for the original iPhone, the 3G iPhone and the original version of the iPod Touch. Also remember that jailbreaking your iPhone could brick your device and void your warranty.
