The Russian mobile operator MegaFon said in a brief statement that has signed a distribution deal with Apple to sell the new 3G iPhone in Russia.
However, the company didn’t disclose any other details as the price or when it will start selling the device. “The sales of iPhone in Russia will start this year,” the company said in a statement.
Last year MegaFon announced the beginning of rendering telecommunications services of third generation (3G) in St Petersburg and Leningrad Region.
Late last month the Vedomosti business daily, said the biggest mobile phone operator in Russia, Mobile TeleSystems, has also signed a contract with Apple with regard to the latter’s smartphone. The device is expected to be made available sometime in October. The Russian company said it would sell one million units within the next 36 months.
However, last week, the VimpelCom Group, which markets mobile handset services under the brand name Beeline, was the first company to disclose a deal to sell iPhones in Russia.
VimpelCom had 51.7 million subscribers as of the end of 2007, while MTS has around 91 million clients.
However, the iPhone is already available on the Russian “gray” market, selling for around $1,000. Besides Russia, Apple has another huge market to conquer: China.
So far, there were some rumors and speculations that Apple and China Mobile are negotiating a deal, but no official announcement has been made so far.
