Beating out some of 2008’s leading consumer electronic devices, the stalwart Apple iPod music and media player has once again secured the coveted honour of being crowned Gadget of the Year.
Bestowed with the title at Britain’s T3 technology magazine’s annual awards event, the iPod Touch handset emerged as the foremost device of choice for 2008, leaving the likes of ultra-portable Netbook phenomenon the ASUS Eee PC, TomTom’s GO 930 in-car navigation system, and even Apple’s own iconic iPhone its wake.

Much as with Incisive Media’s recent inaugural British Technology Awards, Cupertino-based Apple hogged the T3 limelight, notching up nods for Best Commuter Gadget (iPhone), Best Music Gadget (iPod Touch 32GB) and the Gadget Candy award (for its super-slim MacBook Air laptop).
Commenting on Apple’s continuing domination in the technology market, T3 editor Michael Brook said in a Reuters report that: “The iPod wasn’t the first MP3 player, but it was, and is, by far the best,” while the iPhone “clearly wasn’t the first smartphone, but it was the first one that every man, his dog and his dog’s ticks would sell limbs to own.”
Marking the second time T3 has hosted the awards event, the evening’s proceedings were held in London’s swanky Park Lane and hosted by actor James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven, Waking Ned Devine, Cold Feet).
Other notable winners on the night included the Audi R8, which scooped the Drop Dead Gorgeous award, while the BBC’s iPlayer watch-again service secured top honour for Best New Media, Nintendo’s motion-sensitive exercise regime Wii Fit picked up Best Gaming Gadget, and the TomTom GO 930 navigation system walked away with the gong for Gadget You Can’t Live Without.
