Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone navigational technology is being challenged by EMG Technology LLC in a patent-infringement lawsuit.
EMG said a managing member of the company is one of the named inventors of five U.S. patents for navigating the Internet on mobile devices and Internet protocol television. Additional patent claims include the technology for manipulating a region of the screen for zooming and scrolling.
Apple has faced lawsuits from customers who have alleged that the company falsely claimed the phone’s Internet connection is twice as fast as the original iPhone. It has also seen criticism that the phone has problems accessing third generation cellphone networks, which deliver Web pages over the air at speeds comparable to a wired broadband connection.
Compatibility with the so-called “3G” networks was a major addition to the iPhone 3G, which Apple released July 11. The original iPhone couldn’t use 3G networks.
An Apple spokesperson said the company doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
In June, Apple agreed to settle a patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Klausner Technologies that claimed that the iPhone’s visual voicemail features infringed on two Klausner patents for listening to messages out of the order they were received. Terms of the pact were confidential.
Shares of Apple recently traded up 9.1%, or $7.52, at $90.10.
