Apple releases iPhone update

Apple has posted a 2.2 version update for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch, which adds several features to both devices, as well as a host of security and stability improvements. The firmware upgrade adds the ability to download podcasts directly on the device, improves map applications, and fixes some bugs.

Users of the device will be able to use the Google street view function on the built-in Maps application for both handsets. In Street View, users can zoom and rotate using the multi-touch controls, but the iPhone lacks the Compass Mode that T-Mobile’s G1 sports.

The feature allows users to navigate city maps by equipping the maps with images taken from a specially-equipped vehicle. The Google Maps have been improved by integrating walking and public transportation directions, adjusting the user interface, and adding the option of sharing location via e-mail.

The updates will be offered when the user syncs the device with a Mac or PC. Users can obtain the update through both devices through iTunes. Till now, the feature had been missing from the player; and, the users were displeased as the company had blocked the App Store submissions which attempted to download podcasts.

The update addresses twelve vulnerabilities in both devices. At the same time, some impacts from the flaws include SMS message information disclosure weaknesses in the emergency call feature, and remote code execution flaws in the device’s handling of image files and web pages.
