Apple upgrades iPhone as Blackberry Storm hits stores

The iPhone got new features in a pre-holiday upgrade Thursday by Apple Inc. as Research in Motion Ltd.’s new Blackberry Storm hit store shelves.

The new software, which includes such perks as a 360-degree view capability with Google Maps and walking info for public transportation stops, gives Cupertino-based Apple extra ammunition in the holiday-giving battle with other popular new offerings such as Research In Motion’s (NYSE:RIM) new touch-screen BlackBerry Storm.

Podcasts can also be downloaded through the iPhone using a 3G or Wi-Fi network.

In addition, iPhone customers will have better safeguards for downloading e-mail and using the Safari Web browser, and the company said there will be fewer dropped calls.

Verizon Wireless Inc. has priced the BlackBerry Storm at $200 after rebate, about what Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) sells the iPhone for. Lines were reported Friday morning at stores waiting for the devices go on sale across the country.
