We know. Easter is still a few months away. But, seeing as how Apple has dropped a few little surprise features into their iPhone 2.2 OS, it’s iPhone Easter Egg time!
By now, most iPhone and iPhone 3G users have no doubt already updated their precious handset to the latest iPhone 2.2 OS, looking forward to Google Maps with Street View and walking/transit directions, a refreshed Safari UI, Japanese emoji icons, auto-correction toggle, and direct podcast downloading from iTunes. But, there are a few more surprises hiding within the iPhone 2.2 OS.

Embedded YouTube videos have been viewable on the iPhone and iPhone 3G for a while now. The iPhone has been displaying embedded YouTube videos as a clickable graphic that would launch the iPhone YouTube player. But, only YouTube videos transcoded to iPhone-friendly formats would be playable. Unfortunately, you had to actually click on the YouTube “play graphic” to find out if the video was available for viewing on the iPhone.
The iPhone 2.2 OS changes this with an updated YouTube video graphic that lets you know if the embedded YouTube video in question has been converted (transcoded) for playback on the iPhone. Never again will you click on an embedded YouTube video only to find that the video is not available in iPhone format.

In addition to being able to directly download podcasts to your iPhone, iPhone 2.2 OS allows you to quickly delete unwanted podcasts with a simple swipe-and-tap. Swipe on a podcast title and a “Delete” button appears. Tapping the “Delete” button will, obviously, delete the podcast and send you on your merry way.
iPhone OS problems
Apple has been good about sneaking in some cool, undocumented features into the iPhone 2.2 OS. Unfortunately, Apple snuck in a few problematic Easter Eggs into the new iPhone firmware. There’s a whole post dedicated to iPhone OS problems here. If you’ve been having problems with WiFi connectivity, iPhone application disappearance, or iTunes syncing, check out the post.
If you’ve found any additional iPhone OS Easter Eggs that you think are worth mentioning, drop us a line or leave a comment!
