A recent wave of rumors point to a possibility that Apple might sell 4GB iPhone for $99 after holidays.
Citing unnamed sources, a 2-year-old Apple rumor web site, The Boy Genius Report (BGR), claimed it received anonymous tip that the alleged $99 model would include a 2-year agreement and it would be sold through Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Connection Centers.
If BGR is to be believed, then Apple could expand the range of a low-end, mid-range, and high-end iPhone devices and start selling them at discount beginning December 28, 2008.
Analyst firm Kaufman Brothers believes rumor to be viable, but they are still unclear about the exact timing of the discount. The Kaufman analysts believe that the iPhone could support the $99 price without significantly reducing margins. Currently, Apple sells 8GB and 16GB iPhone models for $199 and $299, respectively.
“If there is no Wal-Mart iPhone, there should be one,” according to Joe Wilcox of Apple Watch. “Wal-Mart’s global reach would make iPhone available in the numbers of outlets necessary for real sales success… But distribution isn’t enough. Wal-Mart shoppers look for low prices, and $199 for the device plus $30 a month for data is too high. But a $99 iPhone with the capacity of a 4GB Zune for the same price would appeal to a broad swath of buyers. It’s buy a 4GB music player and get a great data-capable phone for free. For budget buyers, the phone would move,” he added. Wal-Mart also began selling the T-Mobile G1 in late October, just a week after it was released.
