The Submarines released their sophomore full-length album Honeysuckle Weeks earlier this year to critical acclaim. Over the last six months, songs from the album have appeared in major TV shows like Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, The Hills, Privileged and the music-infused film Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Their first major mainstream success came from the good old iPhone bump however.
Currently, the track “You, Me and the Bourgeoisie” is being used in the re-vamped iPhone 3G commercial, with album art, artist name and lyrics used to demonstrate the “Shazam” music application on the phone. This has caused a huge spike in digital track and album sales for the band. The album continues to rise this week, sitting at #19 on the Billboard Alternative Chart and #62 on the Heatseeker Chart.
The couple spent the summer and fall on the road, both on their own headline tour and as support for such artists as Aimee Mann and The Brazilian Girls. They’ll continue the pattern through the winter as they share the spotlight with The Morning Benders, who released their debut full-length album Talking Through Tin Cans earlier this year and toured the US over the summer as main support for the Kooks.
On December 5, The Submarines will play their last show of the year in their hometown of Los Angeles at The Echoplex.
As one year comes to an end for The Submarines, another begins. The duo will kick off 2009 with a co-headline tour alongside The Morning Benders. The 23-city trek begins on January 31 in Costa Mesa, CA, and ends on March 1 in San Diego, CA, with the two bands trading off closing duties each night.
