While many are feeling slightly deflated by Apple’s less-than-exciting showing at the last ever Macworld, spare a thought for counterfeiters in the far east, who were left red-faced when the rumoured announcement of a new Apple iPhone nano at Macworld 2009 never materialised.
The run-up to Macworld 2009 was chock-full of rumours about exciting new products that Apple just might unveil at the industry event, and there was much talk of a newer, smaller iPhone Nano on the cards. Exciting stuff, but, as it turned out, the only new hardware release to come from what was a decidedly muted final Macworld was the new 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro with built-in battery.
But while there wasn’t a whiff of an iPhone Nano at Macworld, counterfeiters in the far east had still been busy producing fake iPhone nanos to cash in on the rumoured announcement.
According to BBC News, the fake iPhone nanos started appearing in Thailand shortly after Christmas. There are also reports that the counterfeits have made an appearance in some European stores.
Branded with the Apple logo, the fake iPhone nano would do a good job convincing the casual tech buyer that Apple has finally bitten the bullet and produced a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone. Times are hard, but they’re not that hard, and while Apple may one day bring out a product similar to the iPhone nano fakes currently in circulation, we’ll probably all be waiting a very long time for it.
So if you’re flashing a bright, shiny new iPhone Nano about, I’d pocket it as swiftly as possible. There’s being on-trend with technology, and then there’s being so far ahead of the trend that you’re flying the Jolly Roger for all the world to see. Not cool.
