iControlPad adds iPhone, 3G, and iPod touch support

No one can doubt that the popularity of the iPhone as a gaming device has surprised everyone. With that popularity has come a few annoyances though, one of which is your fingers covering the screen when playing games – an inevitable factor of touchscreen input.

The guys at iControlPad started developing a solution to that issue last year, however, and the prototype you see in the video above is the near-complete peripheral. As you can see, they have created a case that fits around your iPhone and offers controls that don’t require you to touch the screen.

The iControlPad got much closer to release this week as the team behind it have finally managed to make it compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch. It will also work with both jailbroken and non-jailbroken devices, but game developers need to support the iControlPad in order for it to work without jailbreaking.

A specific release date or price hasn’t been given, but their blog says there will be more information very soon. The final unit will also be black, not white like in the video.

If they price this right then I’m sure it is going to be a popular add-on depending on what games you play. Most titles are designed to work with the touchscreen, but you can’t help but feel a lot of the conversions would play better with their original control schemes instead and the iControlPad makes that possible.
