iPhone craze hits Bangkok

The iPhone craze has come to Bangkok.

Many who imported their iPhones are going to trade them in for the new iPhone 3G launched last week, hoping for better services and enhanced entertainment.

Krit Jeeramongkol, 43, an owner of Phuket’s Sabai Inn resort, says that although he’s been using an imported iPhone for the past two years, he’s excited with the new 3G technology. He hopes to use it to communicate with his business partners through e-mails.

Bank, 29, working at an antique import-export business, also used an imported phone. But he needs the new one for “extended entertainment” rather than business purposes.

“I wasn’t able to use iTunes with the imported iPhone, but now I will be able to connect to it directly,” he says. The after-sales service means he can do more with the iPhone, as well as watch YouTube videos on it.

Another resort owner, Kum-chai Thangthansatid, 46, says he hopes the 3G will help him stay in constant contact with his business representatives. He doesn’t find the phone’s Bt23,275 price tag expensive.

Sasiwimol, a woman business owner, used the Motorola V8. She has now switched to the iPhone to load iTunes.

But while many are excited about the iPhone 3G, others are already getting bored and doubting whether it is worth the money. “I really don’t know what to do with so many applications,” one person was overheard as saying during the phone’s launch at Siam Paragon. And some tech geeks have already moved on from the iPhone craze.

Yet, it’s not only businessmen who have snapped up the expensive gadgets.

Daily Xpress has heard through public relations company Public Hitz that socialites and even royalty could not resist getting their hands on the 3G models. They include the daughter of Thanpuying Butri Viravaidya, the deputy private secretary to His Majesty the King and the son of ML Piyapas Bhirombhakdi who plays a leading role in “Suriyothai”.

It appears the iPhone 3G is one luxury item that Thais will be addicted to for a while - before they get bored and find something more practical as technology advances.
