Apple’s iPhone leads in mobile game downloading

Downloads of mobile games is surging with Apple Inc.’s iPhone users leading the market, according to a report released Monday.

ComScore said that four out of the top 10 phones used for games are iPhones: the 8 gigabyte 3G model at No. 1, the 8GB iPhone at No. 2, the 16GB iPhone 3G at No. 3, and the 16GB iPhone at No. 7.

Other phones in the top 10 include the BlackBerry Curve 8330, BlackBerry Curve 8310, the “smartphone-like” Samsung Instinct M800, and LG VX10000 Voyager.

ComScore said users of Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone account for 14 percent of mobile game downloads. It added that mobile phone downloading of games tripled in November to almost 3 million.

Among smartphone users, the iPhone accounted for nearly a third of the downloads, compared to a market average of 3.8 percent.

Overall, an estimated 8.5 million people — 3.8 percent of mobile subscribers, — downloaded a game in November. ComScore said about 20.5 million, or 8.9 percent, played a downloaded game.
