Is The Snapdragon an iPhone Killer

It seems that not a week goes by in the world of mobile technology where a new competitor to the Apple iPhone is unveiled to the world. This week is no exception.

Unveiled as the Toshiba TG01, this new arrival on the 3G phone circuit boasts Windows 6.1 mobile as well as – and this seems the most impressive element of the phone – a 1 GHz processor.

The TG01 promises many exciting features when it arrives in Europe during the summer months (no date confirmed as yet). These include a very slick and slim body which is less than 10mm thick.

In addition it will support 3G HSPA, be able to pick up and interact with Wi-Fi networks and include its own GPS. Also there are claims of 3D graphics, mobile TV and a 12-megapixel built-in camera.

The 1 GHz chipset, christened by its producers Qualcomm as the ‘Snapdragon’, promises to provide the TG01 with considerably more processing power than its rivals who are currently running at around 500 MHz.

If this is the case then the TG01 could well be a serious contender for the 3G crown which is currently being worn by Apple for their innovative iPhone 3G.

Already, even before the Toshiba TG01’s release, there are talks of Qualcomm producing the next generation of Snapdragon processors with 1.5 GHz of processing power operating on a dual core. This would give the TG01 – or any 3G it was placed in – immense operating capabilities and would certainly have Apple playing catch up.
