Blackjack is the quintessential casino game. As with every other, the odds are with the house.
Over the years blackjack players have searched for any means to turn those odds in their direction by keeping track of the cards played. That’s a challenging mental exercise, so a few have employed various devices to help. They could be as simple as a golfer’s stroke counter as sophisticated as devices hidden in a player’s shoe.
The newest wrinkle looks as innocent as it is common. The surprise is that it’s today’s popular must-have electronic device, an Iphone loaded with a $dollar-99 card counter application. It even has a stealth mode. It’s screen black, the phone may look like its turned off, but those buttons are still working and could be counting. It vibrates when it’s time to stand.
Unlike other counting devices, it’s probably already in some players pockets.
“It’s a standard piece of equipment people carry around, so the fact that it it’s going to be in a lot of people’s hands is a bit concerning,” says Atlantis Director of Casino Operations Dave Fuller.
Concerning, but maybe not too worrisome.
Nevada casinos have been warned about the Iphone application and those casino officials we talked with today seem prepared. After all they’ve been looking for card counters with or without devices for years.
“There’s a lot of tell tale signs, you can see by the way they play the way they bid,” says Fuller.
In fact he says to the trained eye, card counters, even those not using a device, are easily identified by their pattern of play and if it looks like you’re counting….. We won’t ask you to leave,” says Fuller. “We’ll ask them to enjoy some of our other popular very liberal games. And we prefer as a company we have that right that they not play blackjack.”
That’s a nice way of saying you’re 86′d from the blackjack table.
Use a device to count at the table and you’re breaking the law. It’s a felony, punishable by one to 6 years in prison and a fine of up to $10-thousand dollars.
The punishment can be even more immediate. Get caught using one at the table to count, they’ll confiscate your Iphone.
That’s real deterrent.
