Ottawa (ECN) - Despite recent competitors like Google’s Android and Ovi by Nokia, Apple’s still dominates the mobile application market with its ITunes App Store, according to a report by the Global Intelligence Alliance Group.
The report analyzed app services through five categories: time to market, the ability to attract developers, the rate of device adoption, the efficiency of the interface and user experience, and having a critical mass of attractive applications.
Apple’s AppStore won in four of the five categories, lagging in device adoption, which is not unexpected given the tight restrictions the company places on its software and technology.
While Apple has had the advantage of being the first company to successfully penetrate the market with its AppStore, offering a wide variety of user generated programs for the IPod and IPhone, many mobile companies are introducing their own variations of the concept.
In addition to Google and Nokia, Blackberry is looking to capitalize on its industry-leading Smartphone market share with a storefront introduction expected in March. Palm and Microsoft are also looking to enter the market.
No one however can currently compete with the 15,000 applications the Apple AppStore is offering.
With Apple’s vision of the IPhone as a software platform as opposed to a hardware gadget, the head of GIA’s Information Technology Practice, Erwin Baumgartner, believes that “manufacturers like Apple…have the ability to position themselves miles ahead of the competition.” Based on the early success of the AppStore, it appears that is right where Apple will remain.
