Apple’s trailblazing iPhone handset has firmly established itself as an industry leader for mobile media at the beginning of this year.

The results from Digital Media analysts comScore showed that 93 per cent of iPhone users in the UK accessed mobile media in January. Over 75 per cent of consumers are using their iPhones to access emails and news which is way above the average for smartphones overall.

Alistair Hill, a comScore analyst said in a statement: “The penetration of e-mail usage on the iPhone is more than double that of the smartphone category as a whole.” Smartphones have an email penetration of just 35 per cent whilst iPhone enjoys over 75 per cent.

Mr Hill said that the exceptional results for the iPhone were due to its innovative touchscreen QWERTY keyboard: “The UK smartphone market has been dominated by the N95, which lacks a QWERTY keyboard. As a result, we see smartphone users favour using the device for music and photo messaging, two activities for which these Nokia devices are particularly well-suited, more than email.”

With so many iPhone users picking up email from their mobile, the potential for an Online Marketing Strategy to be directed through email could be huge. With such a captive audience, email Internet Marketing could surge in popularity among advertising companies.

The iPhone generation were also more likely, according to the comScore stats, to use social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace through their mobile. Nearly a third of smartphone consumers as a whole used their mobiles to check social networks, whereas 55 per cent of iPhone users logged into their social accounts.
