It’s Apptastic: iPhone Finally Gets Turn By Turn GPS

Google maps are great for basic directions but for the directionally challenged, it’s not so easy to use while driving. Enter G-Map, the first application for the iPhone that gives users turn by turn directions to any place in the US. Unlike Google Maps, G-Map is designed with a driver in mind giving users real time prompts and a driver’s perspective of the road as you go. Our friends over at KickingTires took the app out for a test drive and gave it top marks.

G-Map works like most GPS devices you’ve seen. A basic menu guides you through the process of locating addresses, services, and getting directions. No Wi-Fi connection is needed so you’re able to get fast directions in remote areas with no cell service. The software contains a large database of popular points of interest based on Navteq data. It’s divided and sold in two parts: Eastern and Western US. You’ll definitely need to clear some space as each takes around 900MB or over 1.6GB for both.

Once you’ve entered your start point and destination, G-Map calculates the directions and begins guiding you turn by turn until you arrive. The software provides different perspectives while moving including North-up, Heading-up and 3D views. Additional photo-like graphics help you navigate through tricky intersections.

Unlike other services from Verizon and Sprint, there is no monthly fee after purchasing the software. Xroad says G-map for Europe will be available sometime this quarter and for Central/South America, Asia and other countries in the second quarter. You can purchase the two US versions for $19.99 each.
