Babyshaker iPhone app stirs outrage

Babyshaking. There’s an app for that! Apple has axed an iPhone application called Babyshaker after support groups like the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome failed to find humor in the joke.

The app, designed by Sikalosoft, features black-and-white drawings of a shaken baby and the sound of infant cries. When the iPhone is shaken, the cries stop and red “x”es appear over the baby’s eyes. Click through to watch a video of the app.

A description of the program has this intro:

“On a plane, on a bus, in a theater. Babies are everywhere you dont’ want them to be! They’re always distracting you…with their incessant crying. Before Baby Shaker, ther was nothing you could do about it.”

Apple pulled the Sikalosoft program yesterday after protests from groups like the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome and the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation. Both launched an e-mail campaign against it. Said Patrick Donohue, founder of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation: “As the father of a 3-year-old who was shaken by her baby nurse when she was only five days old, breaking three ribs, both collarbones and causing a severe brain injury, words can not describe my reaction.”

Take a look at the video and tell us what you think. Is it just sick humor, funny to people who don’t have kids? Or do you have to be evil to laugh at jokes about dead babies?
