Epocrates says 10% of U.S. doctors use its iPhone app

Epocrates Inc., which provides clinical information and decision-support software to 600,000 clinicians worldwide, says more than 10 percent of physicians nationwide have downloaded its iPhone application in the last nine months.

In less than a year, more than 75,000 U.S. physicians have the app, officials at the typically tight-lipped San Mateo company said earlier this week. “These physicians tell us every day how enthusiastic they are about the new content, graphics and features that we developed specifically for this new generation of smartphones,” said Jeff Tangney, president and chief operating officer of Epocrates.

The company said its Epocrates Rx drug and formulary guide “continues to rank as the #1 free medical application downloaded in the Apple App store,” noting that doctors and other health-care professionals typically use the application to get critical information about correct drug dosing, adverse reactions and interactions to ensure safe prescribing and treatment.

Officials weren’t immediately available to answer questions about what impact the iPhone surge would have on its financial results and future strategy.

Epocrates canceled plans late last year for a planned $75 million initial public offering, according to a filing it made with the Securities and Exchange Commission, after saying the IPO would have provided “discretionary financing.”

As of late last year, it had raised more than $86 million in funding from VC firms including Sprout Group, Goldman Sachs, InterWest Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Three Arch Partners and Bay City Capital.
