O2 Makes Room For New iPhone

With the launch of a new iPhone on the horizon the mobile phone company O2 is rushing out special after special on its existing iPhone stocks.

Another, potentially more important reason, is the pending end of O2’s exclusive deal with Apple in the UK. The company signed this contract in the summer of 2007, and it is thought to have included a two-year break clause.

A similar deal between Apple and AT&T in the US ended recently, and with the iPhone having already sold over 17 million units worldwide it is no surprise that rival phone companies are eagerly waiting to get a slice of the lucrative pie. It is however not conclusive that O2’s contract with Apple will indeed end, or whether the exclusive multi-year arrangement will in fact continue.

If the contract does end, this will have wide-ranging implications for companies wishing to buy into the franchise for the launch of the new iPhone.

Facing such uncertainty, O2 is spending the bulk of its budget on making its current 3G iPhone deals as sweet as possible for both new and existing customers. Existing customers for example have the option of an 18-month extension of their contracts, with the iPhone.

The new iPhone is to be revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference that Apple will start on 8 June in San Francisco. Some features include faster wireless networks, better camera and recording capabilities, and expanded memory.

With such upgraded features it is little wonder that companies are keeping a careful eye on the marketplace.
