Skype Bans Jailbroken iPhones: ‘Skype calls over 3G networks are currently not allowed’

Skype app for iPhone and iPod Touch banned all support for jailbroken devices with the message: “Skype calls over 3G networks are currently not allowed due to contractual restrictions.” Now jailbroken iPhone users can’t use Skype even if they are using WiFi.

According to this post this new development was preceded by a warning issued after the most recent Skype update: “This version of Skype is only supported on unmodified iPhone OS 2.2.”

From this, it appears that Skype is working with Apple and AT&T to prevent people from using the 3G networks to make VOIP phone calls. This, however, makes Skype inaccessible to jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch users, even if they’re using Wi-Fi.

Skype’s reviews on iTunes App Store started to plummet, as many disgruntled users are leaving one-star reviews due to this recent development.

How will Skype respond to a fairly large user base that can’t use it’s product? Will this motivate people to stop jailbreaking their devices?
