Today, just in time for CTIA Wireless 2009, the big phone conference in Las Vegas, Skype is releasing its application for the iPhone. The company said a BlackBerry version would soon follow.
You may wonder why it matters, when applications like Fring and Truphone, already deliver cheap Skype VoIP to the iPhone.

Skype says the reason is that its free app will have better sound quality than competitors, and more features. For instance, it will integrate with the iPhone address book, so that you can open Skype directly from your contacts. Another nicety, you can add a new photo to your Skype profile from your iPhone camera.
There is one major restriction. Skype calls have to be made over Wi-Fi, not over the voice or data frequencies of the phone.
It will work with the second generation of iPod Touch as well, turning the Touch into a Wi-Fi phone (and yes, other apps already do that).
We’ll see how well it works tomorrow, when I am making calls from the show floor.
