Some new rumors about Apple’s newest incarnation of the iPhone have surfaced in the past 24 hours concerning a release date and details on some of the new features. According to a source closely connected to Apple’s hardware team the iPhone 2009 is set to launch on July 17th.

Although some are describing the upgrade as “minor,” judge for yourself… The new iPhone will supposedly be equipped with an OLED screen, which in my opinion is pretty major. OLEDs emit light, as opposed to LCD screens which rely on a backlight. This should greatly improve contrast and provide a more vivid picture - take a look at Nokia’s N85 (bottom) which has an OLED display compared to the N81 which has an LCD.

In addition to the improved clarity, OLED displays use less energy so the new iPhone’s battery life should be better than the less than spectacular battery life of the iPhone 3G. In fact it is rumored to have 1.5 times the battery life of the current model.
In addition to the improved display the new iPhone has some design changes as well. It will sport a “sleeker design” that will no longer include the metal band around the edge of the device. It will also have a rubber tread backing as opposed to the slippery metal and plastic backs of the earlier models. This should make for a lot less slip-out-of-the-hand-crack-the-screen accidents. In another aesthetic improvement the new iPhone’s Apple logo on the back will glow like the ones on many Apple laptops.
Some other features that have already been known for a bit include a 3.2 megapixel camera with video capture and editing capabilities, a built-in compass, built-in FM transmitter, turn-by-turn directions and the ability to send picture and video via MMS. The $199 and $299 price points will supposedly be maintained as well (for 16GB and 32GB models respectively).
