New iPhone? Rumors fly before Apple conference

Tech bloggers and Apple fans are buzzing about what may be the latest version of Apple’s iPhone.

Apple is set to host its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco in early June, and industry analysts are busy guessing whether the Cupertino California company will roll out the newest version of its popular smartphone.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, an industry watcher, recently predicted Apple would wait until late June or early July to introduce a new version, in a separate, Apple-hosted event.

But other analysts and industry-watchers say the WWDC would be the perfect time for Apple to unveil its new phone, as dozens of developers will want to be briefed on the hardware capabilities.

In addition, the conference happens just weeks after Palm introduces its much-anticipated Pre, which is set to rival the iPhone with similar features.

The new iPhone would update the company’s popular 3G version, and rumors about features include a new 3.2 megapixel camera (replacing a 2 MP version), 16GB and 32GB versions, along with a 652Mhz CPU (an upgrade from the current 400Mhz).

Some speculation has also centered around a possible video or video conferencing feature, similar to Apple’s iChat feature found on Macs.

Still other rumors have a new iPhone with 720p HD capabilities which could be plugged into a HDTV.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has been away from the company on a medical leave and is not expected to attend the conference, fueling even more speculation that Apple will delay the launch.

Apple has used the WWDC to launch other versions of the iPhone, with little or no advanced fanfare. The company is notoriously tight-lipped about product launches until rollout, and Apple users have been known to buzz about potential new products months before they hit the market.
