One common complaint about Apple’s iPhone is that it isn’t available from more wireless carriers.
Putting aside whether you’re a fan of AT&T - the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the United States - the fact remains there are plenty of people who can’t or don’t want to leave their wireless carriers.
Some even resent the idea of switching teams just to own an iPhone, and they are patiently waiting for the day when AT&T’s exclusive deal with Apple is over.
So when stories started swirling last week that Verizon Wireless and Apple were in close talks to bring the iPhone to the huge carrier, it was a big deal.
Unfortunately, these Verizon iPhone stories from BusinessWeek and USA Today cited anonymous sources. So frankly, everything is suspect, filled with speculation, and many questions were left unanswered.
But one thing is painfully clear for Verizon customers hoping to have an iPhone in their future: They are going to have to wait until at least June 2010, when AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity might expire.
“It is actually pretty funny: Apple is stuck in a long-term contract with a wireless carrier just like the rest of us,” said Sascha Segan, lead cell phone analyst for mobile devices at the PCMag digital network.
Segan was among the experts deciphering the Verizon iPhone news, sifting through the speculation and calculating what is most likely to be reality for the rest of us. The problem is there are still too many things we don’t know:
Will AT&T pay Apple enough to keep the iPhone all to itself for an extra year or two? Will Verizon balk at Apple’s terms as it reportedly did in 2005 while bargaining to distribute the iPhone? Or will Apple work around its deal with AT&T by announcing a new, different device with Verizon?
“Everyone has their price, and AT&T is very dependent on the iPhone for their business,” Segan says. “If AT&T pays enough, Apple will go for it.”
Rumors of new iPhone-like devices from Apple range from a cheap “iPhone mini” that doesn’t have Wi-Fi to an Internet-connected media tablet running Apple’s mobile operating system to a juiced-up iPhone with more processing speed and video capabilities.
Segan notes that whatever Apple unveils must be compatible with the thousands of iPhone applications already released. However, it’s unlikely any future Verizon iPhone will work on its current network but instead use a new network technology called LTE, which is being embraced by AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and others.
Verizon’s LTE network is scheduled to go online in 2010 in up to 30 markets, Segan says, and what better way to get a premiere party started than with a star like a next-generation iPhone?
“It is a totally new network for everybody,” Segan says. “Everyone is starting a level playing field, and it is much faster than anything out there.”
The guessing should end June 9 at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, when Apple typically reveals its next big things.
“No one really knows what Apple is going to release,” Segan says.
