Attorney general warns iPhone Web site a scam

The new iPhone went on sale today in stores and on the Web — but one site is a scam.

Attorney General John Kroger warned consumers today not to buy a phone through the Web site, CHUL8804.com, which has taken the cash of at least one Oregonian.

The site, which claims to be an authorized reseller for Apple, is offering a new, unlocked 16 gigabyte 3G iPhone for $475. A Hillsboro man, who found the site through an ad on Craigslist, paid the money through a Green Dot MoneyPak card but never received a phone, Kroger’s office said.

The callback number was for the Atlanta metro transit system.

Consumers should avoid the Web site, which the state Department of Justice is seeking to shut down. Kroger’s office also warned consumers to be extremely careful about paying for products in advance with Green Dot prepaid cards or wire transfer services, especially if they have not purchased from the vendor before.
