Doom Resurrection iPhone Game On-Rails

Sometime in the next few weeks, two, count ‘em two, Doom games will be released for the iPhone. Last month, id tech god John Carmack confirmed that an iPhone version of his classic FPS would be released this month, complete with polished graphics and WiFi multiplayer support. And if that wasn’t enough Doom goodness for you, a second game, Doom Resurrection, is also heading to the App Store shortly.

Sporting eight stages, four difficulty levels and five hours of gameplay, Resurrection, developed by Escalation Studios, is expected to make a major splash thanks to its graphical capabilities, and has even been referred to as “one of the true next-generation games on the iPhone” by VentureBeat. This is due largely to the fact that the game uses many assets (textures, weapons, enemies, etc.) from the tech-heavy Doom 3 to give it a level of graphical quality that players aren’t used to seeing on the iPhone.

Sadly though, as IGN reports, FPS fans will be none-too-pleased to hear that Resurrection is not a free roaming affair. Rather, it’s an on-rails game, with players simply being able to aim and shoot, while the game moves you from position to position. Fortunately, the classic Doom will also be available in case on-rails isn’t your thing. While Doom doesn’t have a firm release date yet, Resurrection is expected to be released next week.
