Google brings gestures to iPhone Gmail web client

Google is continuing to prove that it doesn’t need to go toe-to-toe with iPhone’s Mail client to provide some really neat functionality. Google is upgrading its Gmail iPhone mobile browser version with new features, the latest being swipe gestures that actually work within the browser window.

All you need to do to try it out is point your iPhone browser at the Gmail.com home page. It’s only working for English right now, but other versions are expected shortly.

From your inbox, you can swipe your finger to across the message header to make a little Archive button appear, which will instantly consign your message to the darkest depths of email space where you’ll probably never look at it again.

Right now, the functionality is only available for iPhone and most other handsets are allowed to have dedicated Gmail clients anyway. However, the only real difference between the two systems right now is the ability to access messages offline, which is reckoned to be coming with HTML 5 in due course.
