Hospital confirms Steve Jobs liver transplant

Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee says that Apple’s chief executive has an ‘excellent prognosis’ following surgery.

The statement, issued by the hospital with Steve Jobs’ consent, reveals that the Apple co-founder received a liver transplant because he was “the sickest person on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available”.

“He received a liver transplant because he was the patient with the highest Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score of his blood type,” read the statement. “Mr Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.”

The hospital said that Mr Jobs had chosen to have his operation there because its one-year patient and graft survival rates were among the best in the United States.

“We respect and protect every patient’s private health information and cannot reveal any further information on the specifics of Mr Jobs’ case,” concludes the statement.

Jobs, 54, successfully fought pancreatic cancer in 2004. However, he has been on a six month leave of absence from Apple after revealing that the hormone imbalance he initially believed had caused his dramatic weightloss was “more complex” than originally thought. He said he would return to work by the end of June.

Reuters has reported that Jobs is already back at his desk, after a correspondent saw the Apple chief executive emerge from the company’s Cupertino headquarters. Earlier this week, he was also quoted in an Apple press release for the first time since January, fuelling speculation that he had returned to work. However, Apple has refused to comment on whether Jobs’ medical leave has come to an end.
