iPhone 3G S : A Case of Polished Rotten Apples?

The iphone 3G S is finally here. Announced at Apple”’’s WWDC the IPHONE 3G S, with S standing for speed, promises to give Apple’s much hyped device a much needed boost.

Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it’s much, much faster - did we mention S stands for speed?

Yes, according to Apple, the IPHONE 3G S can process tasks two times faster than the IPHONE 3G.

Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 mega pixel unit with tap-to-auto focus and auto white balance - and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features.

You’re also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use.

The 3G S also offers a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple’s also boasting of a new “fingerprint-resistant oleo phobic coating.”

Apple also promises better gaming experience with its new 3D graphics and display.

Another sore miss out feature makes its entry in the new model. Yes, cut-copy-paste is there now. The new iPhone 3.0 software adds this one of the most sorely missed feature in the existing iPhone 2.0.

Apple said the third generation of iPhone software will let users copy information from notes and Web pages, and let people move text between different applications. Users will be able to cut, copy and paste words and photos, even between applications.

MMS capability, another feature high on the wish list, is finally here. Apple iPhone 3.0 will offer multimedia messaging capability with the new 3.0 software allowing users to send each other photographs from the phone. Earlier, users could send text messages or snapshots via email only.

Another interesting feature that debuts is “Find My iPhone.” The feature is designed to help users in case they misplace their device.

With “Find My iPhone” feature users can use Apple’s online Mobile Me service to locate lost or stolen devices.

The feature also lets people remotely erase all data from lost or stolen iPhones, then reload the information using iTunes if they are reacquainted with their devices.

The phone also allows users to surf the web from almost anywhere.

All one needs to do is use the iPhone to connect their laptops to the internet.

This feature will work via USB or Bluetooth.

As expected, Apple has unveiled a higher 32GB version of the iPhone 3G S. The new model will come in choices of 16GB and 32GB memory capacity. The iPhone 3G (second generation) comes in 8 and 16GB model versions.

As for the pricing, the 16GB iPhone 3GS will cost $199, and the 32GB model will come with a price tag of $299. The price of the original 8GB iPhone 3G dropped to $99 from $199.  How will that translate for the Indian market, still remains to be seen as the iPhone 3GS is expected to hit Indian shores only by August.

But even though Apple is boasting of a huge advancement with the iPhone 3GS- its really an advancement over the iPhone 3G.

Most of the ‘advanced features’ being boasted about by Apple, already exist in most of the smart phones available in the market. From Nokia and Blackberry to HTCs and Palmtops.

I have always maintained that the Iphone is possibly the best music phone, but that’s about it. It’s actually a very dumb smart phone- 3MP camera, VGA recording and a built in Compass don’t really make my heart skip a beat.
