Candid Camera: Steve Jobs Captured in a Photo

After months of lying low, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has made a reappearance — in a photo. Entertainment Web site TMZ posted the pic Thursday morning. It didn’t reveal who took the photo but said it was captured on an iPhone around 3 p.m. as the CEO was leaving Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.

Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, had taken a six-month medical leave of absence earlier this year, during which he had received a liver transplant. He returned to work a month ago, but hasn’t made a public appearance since a media briefing last October. Appearances last year showed Jobs had lost significant weight, causing considerable concern among Apple watchers about his health.

Before Jobs officially returned to work, some reporters had staked out Apple’s offices and noted glimpses of him coming and going. This is the first time anyone has obtained a photo of him. This blog wasn’t able to authenticate whether the photo was taken recently.

A spokesman for Apple reiterated a previous comment, saying Jobs is “currently at Apple a few days a week and working from home on the remaining days.” The company declined to provide a recent photo of him.

TMZ’s photo shows Jobs is still looking gaunt. But several informed people who have spoken to those who have seen Jobs believe he is considerably stronger than before. Two weeks ago, he even attended a Coldplay concert in the area and paid a visit backstage, according to a roadie who wrote about it in a blog.

Now that Jobs appears to be getting back into the swing of things, speculation is likely to turn to when he will make his first public appearance. Apple watchers believe it will be this fall to possibly launch a new tablet device that will be bigger than the iPhone, but smaller than the MacBook Air.
