Handheld gaming devices sad end: It’s all for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch now

The trend in the gaming world is changing fast. I once told you this would happen after the launch of the App Store. iPhone and iPod touch are on the way to totally replace other gaming consoles very soon.

The iPhone primarily is meant to be a phone and the iPod touch a music box, but they were not made so. The App Store boom has turned these devices into serious game consoles today. It is not only making Apple earn billions in revenue and iPhone application developers earn millions on the platform, but threatening to push out dedicated gaming consoles out of the market.

iphone_a_gaming_consoleThis is no longer an analysis but a harsh fact, which has been revealed by Nintendo Co Ltd, the maker of equally popular DS and WII consoles. The company recently reported that they are facing profit decline not due to the unfriendly economy but more because of the tough competition coming from Apple devices.

Sony PlayStation, once considered as the direct competitor of Nintendo devices has gone out of the race and for now it is Apple versus Nintendo. While Apple is reporting huge profit one quarter after the other, Nintendo on the other hand is reporting negative sales, which is a direct indication of who would be the winner in the long run.

Nintendo Co Ltd reported a percent fall in quarterly operating profit due to stagnated demand for its game consoles. Apple on the other hand, reported a whopping sales of 5.2 million units of iPhone 3GS just one month after the launch of the device. iPhone and iPod touch applications have also gone up to 65,000 plus, which is increasing everyday.

One very straight reason for the success of the iPhone and the iPod touch as gaming devices are the easy accessibility of applications and games via App Store. You can download any titles right away unlike the long process of purchasing titles for other gaming consoles like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. It is a sad adieu for those who are getting pushed out of the race, but celebration time for the one who is winning.

That’s how it worked and how it still works in the techno world.
