AT&T got quite some heat to not support MMS when the iPhone 3.0 OS got released back in June.

Now AT&T officially announced this week to launch MMS for the iPhone on September 25th.
You actually need to update you iPhone as the MMS feature will get enabled through it. The update will be released on September 25th.
AT&T is defending the delay that they needed to prepare the infrastructure to handle the gazillions of MMS you will send from your iPhone.
If the iPhone software update is only AT&T specific or rolled up in the upcoming iPhone 3.1 release is not clear yet.
