Analysts: Dumping exclusivity could double iPhone sales

Another analyst projected a doubling of Apple Inc.’s smartphone market share if it ends its U.S. exclusive deal with Dallas-based AT&T on the iPhone.

Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty pointed to a 136 percent jump in market share for the iPhone in France after it became available from multiple carriers.

“We expect Apple to broaden iPhone carrier distribution over the next two years and believe this opportunity is under-appreciated by the investment community,” she wrote in a research note issued on Friday.

Huberty said Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) still has exclusive deals in six markets that made up 70 percent of iPhone sales in the second quarter. Making the devices available to other carriers in those markets would bump market share to 10 percent from its current level of 4 percent, she wrote.

If Verizon started selling the iPhone in the U.S., Huberty projected that market share here would grow to 12.2 percent from its current level of 4.9 percent.

That is the same type of prediction made earlier this summer by Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi, who wrote, “Verizon’s postpaid subscriber base is not only larger than AT&T’s, but more importantly, is untapped whereas we estimate more than 10 percent of AT&T’s (NYSE:T) postpaid users already have an iPhone.”

Apple earlier this week went the multi-carrier route with the iPhone in the U.K., adding Vodaphone Group PLC and France Telecom’s SA unit to its previously exclusive seller there, Telefonica SA’s O2 unit.
