Apple Inc. updated its Apple TV software Thursday, providing a new interface with direct access to rented and purchased movies as well as compatibility with new iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras features.

The company also released new iTunes software, making it more compatible with Apple TV software.

One of the new aspects of the expanded Apple TV is that it allows users to use the Faces and Events features found in the iPhoto desktop application and includes support for listening to a wide array of Internet radio stations.

Apple TV users also can now take advantage of the iTunes Genius Mix option that creates and suggests playlists.

The announcement disappointed some fans of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) who had hoped for connection to outside content such as streaming video from Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix Inc.’s (NASDAQ:NFLX) video service or an Apple TV version of the iTunes App store, where third-party developers could offer their products.

The new software is being distributed as a free automatic download to all Apple TV customers.
