Iron Boxing 3 offers better graphics to iPhone 3Gs owners

When Apple significantly upped the processing power and GPU of the iPhone platform, we knew we’d be seeing more graphically impressive games coming to the App Store. After all, a major part of Apple’s push with the 3Gs was gaming: it’s a speedier device aimed largely at iPhone gamers.

But how would programmers handle the upgraded specs of the new iPhone? Would they program to the lowest common denominator, or would they make titles that were limited to the 3Gs only?

Thanks to Iron Fist Boxing 3, we can now see the divide in graphical performance between the iPhone / iPhone 3G and the 3Gs. The side-by-side comparison above shows what you can expect. To the left, the game is rendered through OpenGL ES 1.1 on the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The boxers look almost cel-shaded. On the right, however, the iPhone 3Gs renders skin texture and even back hair through the advanced functionality of Open GL ES 2.0. It has become a significantly better looking game.

What this means in the real world is that if you play Iron Fist Boxing 3 on a 3Gs, you’ll see shadows, bloom lighting and even sweat cascading down your boxer’s torso, as well as additional in-game effects like motion blur. The 3Gs can’t handle this lightly: it only renders at 30 FPS. Otherwise, you can turn off the updates and attain a frame rate of 60 FPS. Original iPhone owners are locked in to the lowest setting.

The distance isn’t so drastic, but it shows the divide between iPhone hardware that is only going to grow as developers become more comfortable pushing the 3Gs’ limits. I’d say we’ll see minimum specs on App Store titles soon enough.
