Lala iPhone App: Unlimited Streaming for 10 Cents Per Song

Lala has had a busy week. In addition to partnering with Google for its new Discover Music search Wednesday, the streaming music site submitted its first iPhone app to Apple on Monday.

The free app will work much like the service at lala.com: Users can preview a full-length version of the song once, and are then presented with the option to buy that song for 10 cents. That purchase does not download the song for use on other devices, but it does provides access to unlimited streams of the song–on the iPhone or lala.com.

The Lala app will also “match” the songs currently in a user’s iTunes library and provide free access to streaming version of those songs too. This music mover tool “essentially put all your music up in the cloud,” a Lala spokesman said.

“You don’t literally upload all your tracks; we just do a match. You got Beastie Boys’ ‘Hello Nasty’ and Lala has the Beastie Boys’ ‘Hello Nasty’ and we just do a match and mirror it,” he said. “Basically it looks like the song in your collection but it’s actually streaming from our master” list of 8.5 million songs.

Lala said that for every 1,000 songs a user listens to on its site, they purchase 200 of those songs.

The company is also working on apps for all major platforms, including BlackBerry, Android, and the Palm Pre. They do not have a set timeline for when those might be available, but the spokesman expected to have at least one of the apps on the market by year’s end.

On Wednesday, Google unveiled a new music search feature that will include in its search results streaming music clips from partners like MySpace, Lala, Pandora, imeem, and Rhapsody.
