TomTom Car Kit Does NOT Work With iPod Touch/iPhone 2G

Posted in iPhone News by admin. Published October 29th, 2009

Bad news, iPod touch users and owners of a first generation iPhone; the TomTom car kit will not work with your gadgets. AppleInsider has received direct confirmation from TomTom that neither product is compatible with the car kit.

Both gadgets can handle the app, but for whatever reason the car kit is only compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The TomTom car kit offers a better GPS and higher quality audio, in addition to acting as a dock.

Earlier reports had suggested that the oldest version of the iPhone or the touch might possibly be compatible with the kit. This news should put an end to those discussions. The $119.95 TomTom car kit was originally set to launch this summer, and was recently delayed until October. Considering the fact that it is now Oct 28, they could end up missing that date too.

It sounds to me like the TomTom team has encountered some difficulties with their car kit. The spate of delays, and the fact that we’re only hearing about these incompatibility issues now makes me think something might be awry.

Perhaps they tried to make it touch/2G compatible initially, only to run into insurmountable difficulties?

If that is the case, I doubt we’ll ever know.

In response to last week’s lawsuit, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) said in its latest 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it would “vigorously” defend itself against the charges.

For both companies, the stakes appear high: Some legal analysts estimate that damages from the suit could be worth $1 billion.
