Pepsi renders apology for ‘bad taste’ iPhone app - “Amp Up Before You Score”

After having met with widespread criticism for its new Apple iPhone application “Amp Up Before You Score” - which most people felt was insensitive to women, and treated them as ‘objects’ -, PepsiCo has rendered an apology on its Amp Energy Twitter account. However, the app still remains on the Apple App Store as a free download!

Pepsi had claimed the Friday-released app to be a “road map to success for your favorite kinds of women–24 in all” - with categories comprising “sorority girl,” “cougar,” “rebound girl” or “punk rock girl!”

The app purports to help men select any one of the women, and it features a “cheat sheet” to identify the ‘type’ of woman - with lists, links, and a few opening lines. It further encourages users who “score” to post details like name, date and comments, for their friends through Facebook and Twitter.

While Pepsi thought that the singular app would be a hit with men ‘out on the prowl,’ people started commenting on it within hours of its release, saying that the app was particularly offensive. Pepsi and its Amp Energy division learnt of the reviews from Twitter users, as well as shots from blogs.

In its apology, Pepsi said: “Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it’s in bad taste & appreciate your feedback.”
