The rumors that Apple (NSQD:APPL) is planning to deliver a Verizon (NYSE:VZ) iPhone in the third quarter of 2010 might be true, claims a report from research firm OTR Global, something which almost every tech observer thought unimaginable.

As per the reports, Apple seems quite serious about sharing the popular smartphone with Verizon. Apple is said to be working on a “world mode” iPhone compatible with CDMA network of the Verizon wireless.
Apple’s present smartphones are only compatible with GSM standard, which AT&T network is part of.
The reported rumors stated back in April that Apple and Verizon were
working together to offer two new iPhone-like devices: less expensive,
and smaller in size.
Features and specs as per reports
-Handset set to release in 2010 will have a smaller screen—2.8-inches, way smaller than the current iPhone’s 3.5-inch display
- Place calls over Wi-Fi
- Display photos
- Play music as well as high-definition video
If the word on street is anything to go by, then you might be able
to get your hands on iPhone equipped with a new hybrid UMTS/CDMA chip
that is capable of surfing CDMA network of Verizon as well as 3G UMTS
networks used by AT&T carriers.
This new device will support any major carrier worldwide. There will
be no need to sell different versions of iPhone by Apple to support
different networks. This just might see huge increase in sales of the
device.
It is also reported that Apple have tapped Asustek subsidiary
Pegatron to manufacture this new device, ditching the current iPhone
manufacturer Hon Hai. Not much has been revealed on this front, but as
the reports pour in, they might provide some more insight into the
matter.
Apple’s expiring contract with AT&T
There are also speculations in the market that Apple’s exclusive
contract with AT&T (NYSE:T) will expire in 2010, and Cupertino, a
California Company, would get the privilege to share the iPhone with
Verizon (NYSE:VZ) Wireless networks.
Apple, according to the reports, already seems in the mood to snub
AT&T for poor coverage, dropped calls, delayed MMS support and lack
of tethering.
However, nothing is yet confirmed since Verizon had aired its Droid
TV ads mercilessly attacking the shortcomings of the Apple’s iPhone.
But the OTR reports insists that even after Verizon’s open attack on
the Apple’s iPhone, both the parties have already reached a agreement
with each other to sell the new iPhone next year.
