LONDON — U.K. paybox BSkyB has joined forces with Apple to launch a new service that from Tuesday enables iPhone users to watch live sports and news via Sky Mobile TV.
A new application at the Apple App Store enables iPhone and iPod Touch owners to stream live TV — via WiFi — from a range of channels including Sky Sports, ESPN and Sky News.
The move means that for £6 ($10) a month iPhone owners will be able to watch live English Premier League soccer and other high-profile sports events.
But there are no entertainment or movie selections available.
Sky Mobile TV is already up and running in Blighty on the 3G networks of cellphone operators Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile.
Earlier this year the paybox launched its online Sky Player service on Xbox Live.
The deal with Apple is consistent with BSkyB’s policy of making live and on-demand content available across a variety of platforms.
