People with knowledge of such things tell me that Microsoft Bing has always been particularly good at finding and displaying explicit adult images, particularly with the “SafeSearch” feature turned off.
Now, with a new Bing app available for Apple’s widely used iPhone, purveyors of mobile porn are sounding the alarm over its potential to hurt demand for their sites and apps.
“Move over adult mobile marketers, Microsoft is coming for your market share with the release of a free iPhone app for its popular, porn friendly Bing search engine,” reports adult-industry news site xbiz.com in a story today. [Warning: some of the ads on the site are explicit.]
The report continues, “Both praised and criticized for the ease and efficiency with which it presents hardcore adult entertainment, Bing has been making industry headlines since its launch. That situation isn’t likely to change anytime soon, as the extent of the new app’s porn-viewing prowess becomes better known.”
Xbiz cites a TechCrunch story that calls the porn results from the Bing app “nothing if not impressive.” That comes in part from the prominent placement of images in the search results in the Bing app. At the same time, the image results returned from the Bing iPhone app tend to be more explicit than those, for example, from the Google iPhone app.
